Introduction

Across the vast tapestry of America, from bustling cities to quiet rural towns, there exists a common thread that binds us all together: the essence of democracy. This grand experiment, built on the pillars of freedom, equality, and justice, was meant to serve the people – individuals, families, communities, entrepreneurs, small businesses, businesses, organizations, faith-based organizations, associations, networks, consortiums, and big businesses. Yet, in recent times, this grand vision has been marred by a troubling reality.

The Erosion of Democracy

The bedrock principle that politicians are meant to work for the people, not the other way around, is increasingly called into question. From local governments to state legislatures and the hallowed halls of the federal government, the people who should be the voice of the nation are often left unheard. Instead, they find themselves oppressed and their voices suppressed.

A Cry for Justice from Our Seniors

Among the most vulnerable and yet prominent of our population are our seniors, who are now facing a grave injustice. Ambushed by power-hungry politicians, they are coerced into submission. Their votes are stolen through the manipulation of their absentee ballots, and they are bullied into casting their votes in a manner dictated to them. Their fears are preyed upon, with threats that they will lose their housing, social security, or even face imprisonment if they do not comply. Decades of wisdom and experience are being reduced to mere pawns in the political game.

A Ripple Effect on All

But this issue extends far beyond our seniors. The oppression and suppression of votes have far-reaching implications for our society. It perpetuates a cycle where individuals, families, and communities become further disenfranchised as politicians amass more power. Policies that should improve everyday living for the greater good often go ignored or deliberately undermined in the pursuit of political gain.

Entrepreneurs, Small Businesses, and Even Large Corporations at Risk

Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and even large corporations are not immune to the pressure exerted by politicians and their chosen cronies who oversee contracts, commissions, and boards. Some are blocked from receiving contracts they rightfully qualify for, while others are threatened with contract losses if they dare to do business with certain entities.

The Threat to Faith-Based Organizations and More

Even faith-based organizations, which play vital roles in our communities, are under threat. Their tax-exempt status is used as a tool for intimidation. Associations, networks, and consortiums limit their potential and support due to the pressure of being denied grants and contracts, thereby having their civil rights violated.

Fears Within Our Housing Authorities and Unions

Fears ripple through our housing authorities, community action agencies, and unions. People find themselves in a conundrum: do they exercise their right to vote, potentially risking their housing, jobs, or union support? The atmosphere becomes one of fear, where even union workers, who pay their dues, fear the consequences of opposing the leadership’s wishes.

The State of Democracy in 2023

In 2023, the state of democracy in America is one of disarray. What was meant to be a government of the people, by the people, and for the people is faltering. It’s a democracy in name, but the power has slipped away from the hands of the people.

A Call to Action

But this is not a lament; it’s a call to action. It’s a call to remind each and every one of us that we hold the power. The power to restore democracy to its rightful place, where it serves as the voice of the nation.

In this 36-week blog series, we will delve deep into these issues, shedding light on stories, solutions, and the way forward. We propose the idea of a local, state, and federal People’s Bureau to counter voter suppression, protect the rights of seniors, individuals, families, communities, entrepreneurs, small businesses, business owners, faith-based organizations, associations, networks, consortiums, and every voice in America.

We want to hear from you. We want to know your thoughts, your experiences, and your ideas. It’s time to speak truth to power and, more importantly, to take action. Let’s ensure that the power is returned to the people.
